Wesley Terrell ran 5 yards in overtime as Heidelberg upset Philadelphia, 20-14, in overtime. Darius Dear passed for two scores for the winners in regulation play.

Gulfport East downed Laurel, 29-15, in the season opener for both teams. Willie Tripplet ran 21 yards for the first LHS score, and later Jimmy Howard hit Tom Fortner on a 17-yard pass. Mike McLemore scored on two runs as Northeast Jones whipped Bay Springs, 18-12. South Jones defeated FCAHS 20-8, as Lafayette Nelson scored on a 50-yard pass from Steve Geddie and then ran for a score. Pat Butler ran 11 yards for another Braves score.

Laurel upset No. 1 Meridian, 8-6, in the return game of former Tornado coach George Blair. Milton Gavin’s blocked punt was the only Laurel touchdown in the game. Quarterback Jeff Moss passed to Allan Williams for the two-point conversion. Julius Delocach passed for one score to Mitch Reynolds and then ran for anther as West Jones tied Magee, 14-14. Northeast Jones rolled over Monticello, 40-0, as Terry Keyes, Mike Ducksworth, Barry Clayton, Robert Franklin, and Brad Keyes all scored for the Tigers. Leo Shelby and Earl Bridges scored on short runs while Kim Sanford recovered a blocked punt in leading South Jones over Quitman, 24-19. Gary Vanderslice added a 27-yard field goal for the Braves.

Oscar Ramsey’s three touchdown runs led Oak Park over Roosevelt, 25-0. Joe Louis Moffett also added a rushing TD.

Quarterback Troy Yelverton rushed for 98 yards and scored twice in leading No. 13 Laurel over Wayne County, 12-6. West Jones upset No. 20 Gulfport, 27-16, as Johnny McDonald rushed for 101 yards and scored twice on runs of 15 and 79 yards. Carlvin Tucker scored twice on runs of 4 and 5 yards. Heath Ainsworth scored on three short runs while Derek McKee hit Dalco Turner on a 90-yard pass play and Scott McInnis on a 40-yarder as Heidelberg Academy rolled to a 56-0 win over Newton Academy.
