Ty Keyes continues to put up Ty Keyes’ numbers.
Taylorsville’s sophomore quarterback, who led the state in passing yards last season, is doing so yet again. Keyes passed for 244 yards on 12 completions in Week 5 as Taylorsville picked up its fifth win of the season over previous unbeaten Columbia, 20-13.
“I was very worried about that game going in because of [Columbia’s] size and physicality,” said Taylorsville head football coach Mitch Evans. “I was proud of our team in matching that. They matched up with Columbia’s physicality even though they were bigger than us. I was excited about the way we played. It was our best game by far.”
It was not Keyes’ biggest night on the stat sheet but came against Taylorsville toughest opponent to date. All three Taylorsville scores came through the air as Keyes tossed touchdown passes to Jalon Clark once and Raven Arrington twice.
“Keyes has a good night,” Evans said. “He was on. He made one or two bad reads on the night, but overall he had a good game.”
Keyes mentioned those bad reads and mishaps himself as he strives to improve week in and week out.
“I missed some things I should have done better with,” said Keyes. “I had 244 yards, but I feel like I should haven’t done better than that.
“I knew it was our biggest game of the season [thus far], so we wanted to come locked in and physical. Coach [Evans] told us to come out and have a good game. Overall we did.”
Through five games – and five wins – Keyes has tossed for 1,448 yards on 79 completions and 16 touchdowns (also a number Keyes leads the state in). His completion percentage is among one of the best in the state, too, with a QB rating of 135.3. The closest to Keyes in numbers is St. Andrew’s Episcopal (Ridgeland) senior quarterback Holland Townes who has 1,180 yards on 79 completions and a 7 to 9 touchdown to interception ratio. Keyes only has four INT’s on the season, three of which took place in game one of the season vs. Northeast Jones.
Ty Keyes is our Sports601 Powerade Player of the Week in Week 5.
