If you ask Taylorsville head coach Mitch Evans what would be a great word to describe Taylorsville senior running back Jeffery Pittman, that word would likely be “selfless.”
Pittman saw that the team needed a bit of help on the defensive side of the ball and selflessly offered his services.
“The thing about him being on defense is because he came to us. He asked to play defense. He saw we were struggling a bit on the defensive side of the ball and he came to us and said ‘coach I believe I can help us there.’ When you get a player like him who comes to you and says that, you put him in there. Ever since we played Philadelphia he’s been in there,” said Evans.
While Pittman has been effective defensively and was again last Friday evening, his offensive performance garnered him Sports601 State Farm Player of the Week honors this week as he rushed 22 times for 178 yards and four rushing touchdowns against Union in a 65-37 playoff victory.
“As they always do, our offensive line did what they were supposed to,” said Pittman. “I’m just the man lucky enough to carry the ball.”
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Tartars delivered a statement drive with Pittman leading the charge, taking every carry on the +50 yard drive and capping it off with his and Taylorsville’s final score of the evening. Evans credits Pittman’s devotion to the weight room for drives like that.
“It shows his physical conditioning. He absolutely loves the weight room. He’s one of the first ones on the line to run sprints at every practice. His physical fitness is crazy,” explained Evans.
When asked, both Pittman and Evans had the same reply to which was the senior’s most memorable rush of the night. They simply replied, “all of them.”
Looking to Friday’s contest versus Enterprise, Pittman has one goal in mind: win.
“I expect us to come out and do what we are supposed to do,” said Pittman. “We have to come in and handle business as we have always done.”
