Sumrall’s Tristan Cooley, one of the top high school golfers in the state, signed with William Carey University on Wednesday. It turned out to be an easy decision for the senior.
“They were definitely close to home. I have younger siblings, and I don’t want to miss them growing up and seeing them,” Cooley said. “And it’s just a great school. It’s a Christian school and I’m a Christian, so it fits perfectly.”
Her coach at Sumrall, Chuck Cameron, started the school’s program about seven years ago. From then to now, he’s seen Cooley grow up before his very eyes, so Wednesday was a special day for both.
“This all started back when Tristan was in the 7th grade, my second year here at Sumrall,” Cameron said. “Tristan’s just grown from there. She is very hard-working. She works 12 months out of the year on golf. It’s an all-time thing for her.”
“She is the very best golfer I’ve ever coached. Without a doubt.”
“It’s a really big moment,” Cooley added. “With all the hard work and dedication that each person that signs puts in, it’s definitely great to look back and see you accomplished this. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my grandpa, parents, family and coaches that have supported me all the way through.”
