John Rhys Plumlee seems to enjoy playing Wayne County.
In 2016, the Oak Grove quarterback tossed a two-point conversion and recorded an interception on defense in helping the Warriors knock off the War Eagles. Flash forward nearly one year later to the day, and he was back at it again Friday night.
Led by Plumlee’s six total touchdowns, Oak Grove dominated Wayne County, 42-3. The win moved the Warriors to 2-0 on the season, while the War Eagles fell to 1-1.
“We were definitely expecting this,” Plumlee said after Friday’s win. “We expect to dominate every team we play. No doubt. We’re on the road to the state championship.”
“It was a fun one. Always a blessing.”
Plumlee got the party started early for Oak Grove just two minutes into the ballgame when he hit Kevin Barnett for a 35-yard touchdown. Once again, the Warrior offense started the contest with their “jumbo” package, featuring some of their biggest defensive players. Once again, it worked.
“Our jumbo package came out again, and we set the tone real well,” Plumlee explained. “When you get the dice rolling like that, it feels like the game gets easier when you go from there.”
Sure looked like it did. Just a few minutes after their first score, Plumlee found Barnett again for another Warrior touchdown. In the second quarter, the duo connected in the end zone for a third time, making it 21-0 Oak Grove. At that point, the game felt over, especially with how well Oak Grove’s defense was playing.
“Our defense, Coach Waites and all those guys have done a great job,” Oak Grove head coach Drew Causey said. “They’re just flying around and playing hard. We played pretty dang good tonight. I was really impressed with our effort.”
Late in the second quarter, Wayne County added their first and only points of the ballgame on a 37-yard field goal from Heath Mosley. Oak Grove outscored Wayne County 21-0 the rest of the way, as Plumlee added two rushing touchdowns and a touchdown strike to Deltarus Thompson.
“The score does surprise me because that’s a great football team we just played,” Causey said. “But our effort and execution, no that doesn’t surprise me. We got a great group of guys that are really special. We enjoy coaching them every day.”
“I think we got a chance to be pretty good,” Causey added. “We got a tough one next week with Laurel coming here, so it does not get any easier.”
