Dusty Cook wasn’t among the list of starters Friday night in Soso.
However, when called upon, the junior quarterback’s answered. And in a big way.
Filling in for Peyton Brown, who aggravated an existing knee injury early in the first quarter, Cook stepped in and led West Jones to its third straight win and second in Region 3-5A.
“Peyton had two great weeks of practice,” said Pierson. “So we went with him early. In the first series, I think about the sixth or seventh play, Peyton got injured so we put Dusty in the game. Dusty understood the game plan from paying attention in practice, and because of that he was prepared.
Him being prepared is what made us successful Friday night. I don’t remember his exact stats, but I do know he managed the game and did a good job of distributing the ball.
Cook finished the game with 120 yards on nine completions and two touchdowns.
“I came into the game a little nervous, but I knew my team had my back,” said Cook. “I just did what coach told me [to do]. I also knew my teammates would do whatever they had to do to catch everything I threw their way. My [offensive] line did a great job blocking for me too.”
Cook’s effort and play in Week 7 earns him this week’s Sports601 Jones County Player of the Week award.
