West Jones delivered crushing defeats in girls and boys first-round soccer playoff matches Monday night in Soso. Both teams await the winner of Long Beach-Pascagoula matches set for Tuesday night in other first-round postseason action.
Here’s how the games played out.
Girls: West Jones 10, Forest Hill 0.
Meeting the necessary seven or more goals spread after 50 minutes to envoke the mercy-rule, No. 1 seed West Jones (16-3-2) shutout No. 2 seed Forest Hill 10-0 in a shortened match Monday night to advance.
“I’m very proud of my girls,” said Lady Mustangs head coach Craig Winship. “They bought us an opportunity to play one more game. And they got us three more practices.
"After games like these, someone's season comes to an end, and our goal tonight was for that not to be us. And that's how we played tonight."
Eight different Lady Mustangs scored goals in the win. Junior Bailey James and senior Breonna Williams led with two goals apiece. Haley James, Jenny Batista, Leighellen Thompson, Maylee McLeod, Katie Beth Sumrall, and Maryanna Jefcoat pitched in with solo scores.
Within the first ten minutes, the Lady Mustangs struck the back of the net five times and led 9-0 after the 40-minute half.
“We came out strong and poured a lot of goals in early,” said Winship. “The game took care of itself from there. But we don’t believe that’s going to happen for the rest of the playoffs. Our next game(s) will be as tough as they can be.”
Boys: West Jones 5, Brookhaven 1.
In a full 80-minute boys playoff match, No. 1 seed West Jones (13-5-2) defeated No. 2 seed Brookhaven 5-1 Monday night to advance as well.
"Sometimes in situations like tonight in a playoff game, the face of the goal seems really, really small," said Mustangs head coach Josh Sullivan. "But hats off to Brookhaven's keeper. He played fantastically. He had a bunch of saves early that was incredible.
"But tip your cap to our guys too. They fought hard and played well. They put the ball at their feet and played the game, and that's what we wanted. If you keep creating opportunities, eventually, you find the net."
Despite shot after shot after shot, West Jones didn’t find it’s mark until the 22nd minute. Eight minutes later, the Mustangs struck again, where the two-goal lead held into the break.
West Jones doubled to a four-goal lead 11 minutes into the second half on back-to-back goals from junior Johann Munoz. After Brookhaven avoided a shutout with a goal in minute number 60, brother Isaac Munoz netted the final and fifth goal of the match for the Mustangs.
"The Munoz brothers played well," Sullivan said. "They combined for three of our goals tonight. They've worked hard from the very first practice we held."
Luis Ramirez and Kelton Keene had a goal apiece in the first half.
