Week 3: Sports601 Jones County Player of the Week

Too often in the world of sports, the offense overshadows the accomplishments of the defense.

The defense makes its stand, the offense throws together successful drives and the game is won. Then comes the interview of the quarterback, running back, wide receiver, or the kicker.

No sir – not this week.

West Jones drove across county Friday night and blanked its rivals Northeast Jones, 27-0.

The Mustangs defense dominated from start to finish and leads us to now.

Sports601 would like to recognize West Jones junior Damion Cunningham as this week’s Sports601 Jones County Player of the Week.

“I thought they [defense] played well,” said West Jones head coach Scott Pierson. “Our guys got embarrassed the week before and they responded really well.

“[As to Cunningham], he had zero tackles the first week. I think our defensive coordinator Jeremiah Keyes challenged him to give us more effort and he dominated the inside [against Northeast Jones].”

Cunningham finished Week 2 with two sacks and seven and a half tackles.

“We played as a team,” said Cunningham. “But I think we can play even better next week. It’s about getting better each week.”

West Jones plays host to Quitman in Week 3 for its home opener. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
