Octoberfest will be celebrated in a number of locations next month. Flag Fest was held Friday night in Soso.
West Jones and Forest Hill combined for 29 penalties totaling 202 yards, which is a somewhat staggering number considering the teams are halfway through their 2018 schedule. It’s something the West Jones coaching staff will work to clean up before the Mustangs next game against Natchez on the road.
West Jones defeated Forest Hill, though, 21-0.
The Mustangs dominated in total offensive yards, 267 to 15.
After starting the game with a false start, the visiting Patriots used only three plays to arrive at their first punt of the evening. It didn’t go far – in fact, it didn’t go anywhere. The zero net gain punt gave West Jones the ball at the Forest Hill 19, and the Mustangs covered those 19 yards in just five snaps, one of them being a defensive holding penalty.
Jasper Jones rambled the final two yards to pay dirt. The PAT was partially blocked, giving the hosts an early 6-0 advantage with 9:26 left in the first quarter.
A Scooter Crosby sack helped force a Forest Hill punt on their second possession, West Jones gave the ball right back via a fumble. The teams then exchanged several possessions before a long punt by Walter Thompson pinned the Patriots deep at their own two-yard line.
On the first snap from the two, a posse of Mustangs led by Damion Cunningham dropped the Forest Hill ball carrier on the end zone side of the goal line for a safety. That 8-0 lead would hold until Dusty Cook, who replaced starter Alan Follis late in the first quarter, slung a beautiful pass to a streaking Antonie Kirk. The senior wide-out caught the ball inside the 5, broke a tackle, and strode into the “land of milk and honey.” The PAT was fumbled, but the boys from Soso had a 14-0 lead with 7:23 left until intermission.
Cook worked his magic again late in the first half when he rebounded from a first down sack and a second down incompletion to heave a fourth down TD to Jalen Graham, who snagged the long ball just to the home side of the east goal post near the back of the end zone. The play officially covered 35 yards. Thompson’s PAT was true, and the Mustangs led 21-0 with just 20 ticks left in the second quarter.
The teams could have went home at that point, because that’s the way the affair ended. West Jones now stands at 5-1 on the year.
