Colton Bennett

Colton Bennett (57) of South Jones is celebrated by teammates after returning an interception to the 3-yard-line of Wingfield.

The South Jones Braves played big boy football Thursday night in walloping the Wingfield Falcons, 38-14, at home. The Braves took the opening kickoff and marched 66 yards in eight plays to go up 7-0 early. The South Jones defense then forced a turnover on downs on Wingfield’s first possession and took over at their own 36.

The Braves then drove deep into the Falcons' territory, getting as far as the seven-yard-line, before the drive stalled. After a penalty pushed them back to the 12, Mark Diers came on and drilled a field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.

That’s when the excitement began. On second down and deep inside their own territory, the Falcons’ Keuntay Littleton dropped back to pass. His aerial was snatched out of the air by Colton Bennett, and the big man turned his attention to the Wingfield goal line, rumbling all the way to the three before being taken down.

The Braves’ offense marched onto the field and inserted 250-pound lineman Justin Crawford into the backfield. He was stopped just short of pay dirt on first down but bulled his way in on the second try. Diers added his second PAT of the evening, and the Braves were in control, 17-0.

Early in the second quarter the Falcons blocked a Braves’ punt and recovered the ball at the South Jones’ 6. Quashadrick Jordan crashed his way into the end zone on first down, colliding with a Braves’ defender as he crossed the goal line to trim the deficit to 17-6.

South Jones quickly responded with a touchdown run by Tay Roberts with 3:39 left in the half, and a perfect strike from quarterback Chad Locklear to Travis Connor on a crossing route just over two minutes later to take a 31-6 advantage into halftime. The Locklear to Connor strike covered 55 yards.

The Falcons received the ball to start the second half but were forced into a quick three-and-out. A short punt gave the Braves the ball at the Wingfield 28. South Jones methodically drove to the 2, and Roberts punched it in from there with 6:28 left in the third quarter. The Braves took that 38-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

A Little Momentum:

The Braves picked up their second win in three weeks and now have very winnable games left against Forest Hill and Natchez. If the Braves can win those two, they should get a ticket to the postseason.

Nice Night for the Offense:

The South Jones offensive output was the best it's been all year, topping the previous high mark of 28 points scored in week two against Northeast Lauderdale.Â
