Week 8 Sports601 Jones County Player of the Week

Nothing breathe’s frustration to a wide receiver quite like a dropped pass.

Ask Shiwon Lovett how he felt after dropping a dime last Friday night at Natchez.

Luckily, the mishap happened early and gave the senior wide-out a chance to make amends.

Lovett rebounded with three touchdowns on four receptions to help his team, South Jones, defeat Natchez 42-35 in a critical Region 3-5A matchup.

“Just catch the ball,” Lovett told himself. “[After that] it clicked in my mind.

“I want to get thanks to the offensive line for giving John [Mitchell] the chance to throw the ball. It set up some good plays for the game.”

Mitchell threw for 220 yards on 10 completions in the game, 130 of those to Lovett. He now leads the team in receiving yards with 312 on 14 catches.

“Lovett did a good job for us on offense,” said South Jones head coach Cory Reynolds. “After watching film, we picked at him on the one big catch he dropped. But he came back and had a great night on offense. He had a really good night on defense too. He gave great effort.”

Playing both ways, Lovett wrapped up six tackles and fell on a fumble recovery.

With Lovett’s help, South Jones improved to 6-2 on the year and 2-1 in Region 3-5A.

His performance on both sides of the ball, especially offense, earns Lovett this week’s Sports601 Jones County Player of the Week.
