Brandon Gordon had two catches last Friday night against South Jones in his team’s Region 3-5A opener. He made sure both counted for something.
The Laurel senior wide receiver crossed the goal line twice, first on a 31-yard strike in the end zone from junior quarterback Sinclair Ulmer and his second on a slant up the middle that resulted in a 51-yard catch and score.
“I felt like I had to do that,” said Gordon. “I had a bad game against Petal [in Week 4], so I felt like I had to come out and show myself this past week.
“We had a good practice last week, and [in the game] everyone executed their assignments. Because of that, we won.”
Laurel won the matchup against county and region foe South Jones, 47-8.
Gordon’s performance deems himself this week’s Sports601 Jones County Player of the Week.
“We were excited and thankful to start region off with a win,” said Laurel head coach Todd Breland. “That is the most important thing. I thought our kids competed hard and South Jones competed hard as well. We were fortunate enough to capitalize on their turnovers, and we didn’t turn it over ourselves. And that is what gave us an opportunity to win.”
Breland also praised his senior wide-outs performance.
“It has a lot to do with his athleticism,” Breland stated. “He outran coverage and went over the top of it on his first. And on his second touchdown, he got into space and used his feet to get loose.”
Gordan’s 82-yard, two touchdown outing gives him 11 catches on the season for 233 yards.
Laurel now turns its attention toward Friday night’s clash with Brookhaven. The winner will likely walk away with this season Region 3-5A title.
