Sylva-Bay head coach Terry Underwood had been preaching to his Saints players to not quit and success would come.
Against Centreville, it came.
A 38-6 victory over the Tigers gave Sylva-Bay their first victory - a region win - no less, and the player integral to the victory was junior athlete Jayvion Jones.
Jones, who transferred to Sylva-Bay from Heidelberg, rushed for 270 yards on 32 carries with one reception for 22 yards.
“I have to give all the credit to the offensive line. They did a great job blocking up front,” said Jones. “It felt good to get our first win. Coach Underwood really wanted it, and we all did, so I’m happy to help get it for him and all of us.”
Jones also played defensively, recording two interceptions including taking one forty yards to the house for a pick-six.
“I just read the quarterbacks tendencies. How he would turn and look. You could see it coming.”
Through three games, Jones has recorded a whopping nine interceptions for Sylva-Bay defensively.
“It feels good to be able to play football. I felt like I couldn’t get anywhere playing at Heidelberg, and now I’m somewhere where I’m being looked at now. It is a good transition for me. I love it here. I love getting carries. It is tiring, but I love being able to play through it and grow. On offense, I get after it, and on defense I know I have teammates in my linemen who can make plays. I just love playing both sides of the ball,” said Jones about being able to play football in 2020.
Congratulations to Jayvion Jones, the Sports601 State Farm Player of the Week!
