Heidelberg ended the regular season in style, beating rival Bay Springs, 30-25.
It marked the first win against its Jasper County nemesis since 2010.
“It was a big win and a big boost of confidence for our kids and our program,” said Heidelberg head football coach Darius Dear. “It had been a long time since we had gotten a victory over them. That win meant a lot for us. We get to open up the playoffs at home and its a boost of energy for our team moving forward.”
Last Thursday night’s win was made possible by the play of running back Tavarus Jones. Jones carried the ball 13 times for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the win. He also scored on a two-point conversion.
“It was an ultimate performance by Jones,” Dear said. “He ran hard and physical all week. He was dialed in, and he has gotten better for us each week. At the beginning of the season, we’ve played with a three running back committee. Down the stretch, Jones has solidified himself as our number one back as we go into the postseason.”
“I just trusted my coaches and linemen,” said Jones. “We all believe in each other.”
Tavarus Jones is our Week 11 Sports601 Jasper County Player of the Week.
