Anson Windham wasn’t in for the whole game last Friday night against Clarkdale. Then again, neither was the rest of Bay Springs’ starting roster.
The Bulldogs led 34-0 at the half, prompting head coach Dan Brady elected to send his JV squad in for the second half of the game. Bay Springs held on to beat Clarkdale 34-14 in its Region 5-2A contest.
“We came out and took care of business early,” said Brady. “It’s what we challenged our kids to do. Clarkdale lost a lot of kids from last year. Their coaches do a great job with what they have. But athlete-for-athlete we just matchup a lot better with them.”
Windham, a junior, led the Bay Springs attack on offense, accounting for three of the Bulldogs’ five touchdowns.
“Windham has been consistent for us,” Brady said. “He had a setback in the spring when he hurt his angle. But once the season started he’s been really physical, averaging about 100 yards a game.
“He’s just been a good player for us. He is by far our best running back. At the beginning of the season we had planned to play the running backs by committee, but he’s proved himself so far. He’s not the fastest guy, but he has good speed and makes good cuts.”
In one half of play, Windham piled together 106 yards on 12 carries. He averaged 8.8 yards per carry.
His play one half of play in Week 8 earns him this week’s Sports601 Jasper County Player of the Week honor.
