LaMarcus Stubbs listened attentively to the team’s devotion before last Friday night’s season opener.
“Coach [Dan] Brady told us to play every game like it’s our last,” said the senior Bay Springs’ running back. “[He reminded us] that we aren’t guaranteed a game this week or the next. After hearing that, I played my heart out.”
Stubbs rushed for 113 yards on 14 carries against Lumberton as Bay Springs dominated the Panthers, 32-0.
“I thought we played well,” said Brady. “We executed a lot better than I thought we would. We talked to them in our pre-game devotion about being thankful for the opportunity to play. Our kids used that as an extra incentive.”
Three of Stubbs’ carries landed him in the end zone.
“The first time I ran ‘trap,’ it busted open,” said Stubbs. “After that, it kept opening up for me.”
"Stubbs has been working right hard with Coach [Roger] Satcher," added Brady. "Coach Satcher has done a great job with the backs. In fact, I've just turned over the backs to him this year and stayed with coaching the offensive line. But a lot of the finer points, Coach Satcher has been doing things much longer than I have. The kids are playing hard for him. Stubbs is running the ball much better than he was at this time last year. A lot of that is to Coach Satcher's credit."
Bay Springs tallied 319 yards on the ground against Lumberton.
Stubbs joked about the team's passing stats.
“We had over 300 rushing yards Friday night,” laughed Stubbs. “And barely got a few yards passing the ball.”
Stubbs’ performance against Lumberton earned him Sports601’s Player of the Week award.
Bay Springs travels to Raleigh this Friday night for a non-region contest. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
