A long layoff between games is always a coach’s cause for concern. Just ask Portland Brown who led her Sumrall Lady Bobcats to Sacred Heart Friday night for a non-district showdown.
“We’re coming off the holidays, and it’s been a week today since our last game,” Brown said. “I just told them we would have to go out and not think of who we’re playing, because Sacred Heart is a pretty scrappy team. We just needed to go out and play our game.”
And that they did. Brown’s Lady Bobcats jumped out to a 12-2 first quarter lead and did not look back from there, cruising to a 53-25 win over the Lady Crusaders.
“It took us a quarter or two to get our shooting going,” Brown said. “But they pulled it off.”
Rachel Green led the way for Sumrall with a game-high 15 points. It was a performance Brown has come to expect from the senior.
“I expect that from our seniors. Rachel just does what she does as a senior,” Brown explained. “She’s a big leader and a big part of our team. She does a great job. Once she started hitting, everybody else just started feeling it.”
That includes freshmen like Tariana Greenwood, who finished with 12 points.
“She [Greenwood] did great and will play big for us in the coming years,” Brown said. “She’s got talent. Just raw right now.”
All in all, nine different Lady Bobcats scored at least one point in the win.
“We got contributions from the whole team,” Brown added. “Some that contributed tonight will have to step up even more.”
Sumrall (7-6) will be back in action next Tuesday at Purvis, while Sacred Heart (7-9) will look to rebound tomorrow (Saturday) at home against Vancleave.
