When you look at the Petal offense, one thing is consistent week in and week out: Micah McGowan. As the regular season draws to a close, McGowan has made the most of his senior year, topping last season’s 1,219 yards and 13 rushing touchdown totals.
On the season, McGowan sits at 1,351 yards and 17 total touchdowns. Friday night against George County, the senior running back ran for 150 yards and a touchdown, leading Petal to a 42-7 over the Rebels en route to a Region 3-6A title.
“Mike’s played well all season. Early in the year, he carried us and now that the passing game has gotten better and the receivers have caught fire we are playing well,” said Marcus Boyles.
McGowan averaged six yards-per-carry on the evening with his longest rush totaling 34 yards.
“He works hard and is consistent every week. You know what you’ll get from him. He comes to work every practice and works hard. With the offensive line getting better as the season goes along you see that in his carries, production, and average,” explained Boyles.
With one week left in the regular season - an away contest against Terry - McGowan is sticking to the mentality the Panthers have had all season while crediting the offensive linemen up-front.
I think we have played well all season because of great coaching and the way they’ve led us. We take one game at a time. That is our mentality. It means a lot having the district wrapped up. The offensive line has been doing such a good job, so I want to make sure I give credit to them,” said McGowan.
Boyles feels good about where his team is heading into the final game of the regular season.
“We are certainly glad over winning the district. We can sit back a bit and let everyone play it out this week without us having to worry about that. That was big. Our kids have handled their business every week, so I’m proud of them. That senior leadership we have had, including Micah.”
Congratulations to Petal Panther Micah McGowan on his season, and his phenomenal week as he captures the Sports601 Powerade Player of the Week for the Forrest, Lamar, and Covington County area for Week 11.
