Joey Hawkins has never been one to make excuses. Even in the face of a losing skid, injuries and a tough conference schedule, Hawkins knows his PCS Bobcats simply have to improve with the MAIS playoffs right around the corner.
“What we’re trying to do is continue to improve,” Hawkins said. “We’ve been in every game. We’ve just made too many mistakes and just had some close calls. Everything has kind of went against us, but we still feel like we have a chance to make a deep run in the playoffs. Just have to get back on the winning track this week.”
Even having lost four of their last five games, Hawkins’ Bobcats (5-4) have already clinched a playoff spot. So with two weeks left in the regular season, their focus is on gathering some positive momentum and carrying it into the postseason.
“We’re just trying to put it all together on Senior Night on Friday, go to MRA next Thursday and get ready for the playoffs.”
PCS will look to snap that losing skid this Friday night against East Rankin Academy (4-5). For the most part, the Bobcats are fairly healthy heading into this game. They will be without their second-leading rusher, Alden Rhian, but sophomore Eric Robinson returns after missing last week’s game against Jackson Academy.
Robinson left the Bobcats’ game two weeks ago versus Parklane Academy in an ambulance after suffering a severe concussion and a separated shoulder. With his concussion symptoms completely behind him and his shoulder healed, Robinson has the green light.
“Eric’s back,” Hawkins said. “The Lord blessed us on that.”
For a brief time, Robinson actually thought his career might be over.
“I thought I was done,” Robinson said. “That it was over with, so it feels good to be back out here with my team. With all the love they shared with me last week, it hurt being out and not being able to play something I love.”
Robinson has played all over the field this season for the Bobcats. Running back, wide receiver, kick returner, etc. That’s the way he likes it.
“I like playing several positions. I’ll play quarterback or center for them if I have to.”
Look for a steady dose of both Robinson and running back Sheldon James come Friday night against the Patriots. James leads the conference in rushing at 1133 yards, while Robinson has run for 213 and caught 19 passes for 386 yards. Also, quarterback Brandon Thornton has thrown for 799 yards and ran for another 488. With weapons like that in his arsenal, Hawkins says it’s all about finding the right combination moving forward.
“We’re still trying to find the right combination and personnel on certain plays and situations,” Hawkins concluded. “We’ve just got to make some big plays. We’ve not been as physical as we would like at times. We’re just trying to get consistency. We’ve had a good two days and are trying to get a third day in here. And make something happen.”
