The postseason has arrived for Mississippi high school football. Here are my picks for teams in the Jones County area.
South Jones at Hattiesburg
Good news: South Jones is in the playoffs for the first time since 2009.
Bad news: South Jones now faces Hattiesburg in the first round of the playoffs.
Hattiesburg hasn’t lost a game this season. South Jones will need to pull off a performance, and then some, like it did two weeks ago at Brookhaven to pull off the upset against the Tigers.
Anything can happen in the playoffs, and everyone begins 0-0.
Prediction: Hattiesburg +24
Laurel at Picayune
This season for Laurel hasn’t been as successful as years past.
But this is part three of the season. Laurel’s loss to Brookhaven and West Jones in the regular season can all be forgotten. This can be Laurel’s fresh start.
Picayune can be explosive on offense but so can Laurel. These two teams are no strangers to postseason matchups.
Expect a shootout Friday night. The team who wins the turnover battle wins the game.
Prediction: Picayune +3

Stone at West Jones
West Jones has missed the playoffs for two straight years. Friday night will be a new experience for most players on this year’s roster.
Pierson wasn’t pleased with last week’s regular-season finale, and typically that means a better showing the next time around.
West Jones maybe shaky to start off Friday night. As I stated before, Friday night is a new experience for most on the team.
How comfortable West Jones gets as the night lingers will determine how the night ends.
Prediction: West Jones +1
