Sports601 Hattiesburg Player of the Week for Nov. 20-25

Drexlan Allen has been about as consistent as they come for the 14-0 Hattiesburg Tigers.

“When his number is called, he produces,” Hattiesburg head coach Tony Vance said.

Again, that was the case last Friday night. On just 13 carries, Allen ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns in helping the Tigers knock off rival Laurel, 33-22, in the Class 5A South State Championship game.

For his efforts, Allen has been named our Sports601 Hattiesburg Player of the Week.

“Drex has been solid for us all year long. He’s probably one of the most underrated players on our football team,” Vance said after the win. “He did an excellent job tonight and did what he’s done all year for us.”

Even though his three touchdowns helped the Tigers pull away and eventually clinch the win, Allen was not ready to take full credit.

“It was me, Snoop [Jarod Conner], the rest of the offense, [Darius] Ruffin and the defense. It’s just a team effort,” Allen said. “It’s not all about me. It’s a team effort thing.”

Through 14 games, Allen has run for 603 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Tigers.

“He’s kind of his own style,” Vance said in an earlier interview.

Allen agreed.

“I’m just me, myself and I really. I can’t compare myself to nobody because I’m faster. I guess I can make more people miss than Fabian, but I can’t run through everybody like Fabian does. We both have different playing styles, and that helps on Friday nights.”

Allen and the Tigers (14-0) will face West Point (14-0) at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium this Saturday night at 7 pm for 5A crown.
