Joseph Owens - Seminary

Joseph Owens had 153 yards rushing and two touchdowns in Seminary's 46-7 victory over Tylertown.

Seminary Bulldogs running back Joseph Owens had never had a 100+ yard game in his career. Against Tylertown last Friday, he changed that. Owens ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns and is the Sports601 Powerade Player of the Week for the Forrest, Lamar, and Covington County area.

“I just tried to practice hard all week. We worked hard on motions and things like that, that we would see. The offensive line blocked great. I felt like I made some good cuts during the game. Everything just seemed to be on point during the game,” said Owens.

Owens racked up his 153 yards on 13 carries. The junior averaged over 11.6 yards per carry on the night.

“Joseph has been a good player all year for us,” said head coach Brian Rials.

Rials stated that they saw something against Tylertown that they as a team and specifically Owens was able to exploit.

“They just kept giving us room on a particular play. We practice a lot of different stuff during the week, but that particular play and look, they just kept giving it to us, so we kept going back to the well and he had a big game. He’s had a good year for us, he just hasn’t had a game like that, but he’s been a good player all year for the team.”

Seminary has often used a running back by committee approach in 2019, but Rials stated he feels like he has a three-headed monster in the backfield this year.

“We had some guys as we said earlier in the year that was going to have to step up and take over roles from guys we lost last season. Owens has done a good job with that. Him, Jordan [Barrett], and Cameron [Sanford], we just kind of have a three-headed monster in the backfield and he took the reigns against Tylertown. All of them do a good job of that when needed, but he had his best game of the year Friday night.”

Seminary will look for more production this week from Owens and company as they play host to the Jaguars from Jefferson Davis County this Friday evening. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Congratulations to Joseph Owens, Sports601’s Powerade Player of the Week for Forrest, Lamar, and Covington County!
