Here are your Forrest, Lamar, and Covington County predictions as picked by Kevan Lindsey.
Current record: 51-22
Jefferson Davis County 2-6 at Seminary 5-3
Jefferson Davis County is an unusual 2-6 on the season. If you peep their season, you’ll see why. D’Iberville who is 6A, 5A Hattiesburg, and Taylorsville who is arguably the best 2A team in the state litter their schedule. Their 2-6 record could be deceiving to most. The same can be said for Seminary who had a tough non-district schedule that included Taylorsville also. This game will likely be a close one and as Seminary coach Brian Rials said yesterday, the Jaguars will be looking for revenge since they defeated them twice in 2018.
I’m going to ride with Rials and the Bulldogs in a close one.
Seminary 23, Jefferson Davis County 18
Mt. Olive 3-5 at Sacred Heart 0-7
I picked Sacred Heart last week hoping they could get their first victory on the season. That was not the case. Mt. Olive had a big win over Sebastopol, shutting them out 28-0. I look for the Pirates to keep that momentum up as they scramble for a playoff spot in a competitive Region 4-1A where four teams sit at 2-2 in region play.
Mt. Olive 35, Sacred Heart 0
Collins 2-5 at East Marion 5-2
Collins shocked me a bit last Friday night. Not because they won over a North Forrest team who had to finish their previous game on Monday, but because they shut them out. Can they surprise me again this week? Maybe. The road will be much tougher though as they go on the road to face a 5-2 East Marion team who defeated St. Patrick 40-17 last Friday. If the Tigers can upset the Eagles, it sets them right back in the thick of things for a district championship. I just don’t know if they have the offense to outlast East Marion.
East Marion 24, Collins 8
Poplarville 3-4 at Purvis 5-3
Those Tornadoes just keep rolling. Last Thursday Purvis won the Battle for Highway 589 as they defeated Sumrall 28-17. That moves Purvis to 5-3 overall with five-straight wins. Poplarville started 1-4 on the season but has since reeled off two-straight wins and sits 2-0 in district play. In the Hornets three victories, they have scored 40+ points This game could very well decide who wins Region 7-4A as this is a three-team race between these two teams and Greene County. I have Purvis moving to six-straight wins after Friday night’s contest.
Purvis 34, Poplarville 30
Forrest County Agricultural 2-5 at Sumrall 3-5
This week one of these two teams will get a much-needed region win. Sumrall put up a fight with returning quarterback John Ford in the lineup. Unfortunately, he left the game after reaggravating his injury midway through. Still, if Sumrall can keep up the fight they had last week, they will be dangerous moving forward. The Aggies have been struggling on offense and have been shut out the past two contests. They have to find something to spark them if they want a win this week.
Sumrall 20, Forrest County Agricultural 7
