Playoff scenarios abound
It seems like yesterday we were scrambling at Sports601 to make sure football season preview magazines were right. In a flash, the regular-season is drawing to a close and playoff scenarios abound. Region 8-2A is probably one of the craziest I have ever tried to calculate in years, and I’m still not sure if I got it exactly right. Region 7-4A has a winner-take-all game this Friday as Forrest County Ag and Stone square off for the four seed.
While we won’t know for sure about scenarios in 1A, 5A, and 6A football, some teams are facing the heat. Oak Grove and Pearl will face off and the loser of that game is almost guaranteed out of the playoffs. The same can be said for Hattiesburg as they need to win out to snag a playoff berth. Mt. Olive who has not made the playoffs since 2010 needs to beat Richton Friday night, If so, they are all but a lock for the playoffs.
One thing is for sure, the best thing fans, teams, and players need to hope for is - as the late Al Davis would say - “just win, baby.”
Do you want to make that hire
Mississippi State fans endured another loss this past Saturday, this time at the hands of the Texas A&M Aggies. Bulldog fans are restless and are desperate for change. What I have heard from message boards and friends is a name that I legitimately laugh at. Gus Malzahn.
Yes, I am an Auburn fan, but I say if you want him, come get him. Sure, Malzahn might get you a wild victory over a rival, and probably keeps you bowl eligible. Trust me when I say it, do you want the offense he brings? In case you haven’t been watching, the Auburn offense is anemic. It is dreadful, with no light in sight unless you’re playing lowly Arkansas. The defense is great, and give credit to where credit is due, defensive coordinator Kevin Steele has kept the Tigers in games.
You might not be happy with your team, State fans. Just remember, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
He’s a bad man
Sometimes you have to sit back and accept greatness. Fans have been rumbling to see their superstar quarterback make superstar plays. Sunday they were greeted with that after much anticipation. When the gunslinger hit his wide receivers, I could hear the cheers in my living room like I was at the stadium.
Wait, did you think I was talking about Drew Brees? No. I meant Aaron “The Bad Man” Rodgers.
Rodgers made play after play, putting the Packers team on his back in the most hostile road environment in the NFL: Arrowhead Stadium. The lob pass to Jamaal Williams was a thing of beauty that not many quarterbacks in the history of the NFL could make. With the win, my team moves to 7-1, and look to be once again where they belong - at the top of the NFC North.
Oh, yeah. Good to see Brees back and doing his thing. Good for you, Saints fans. Maybe our teams will meet come playoff time.
