For the third-straight season, the Mississippi All-Stars defeated the Alabama All-Stars behind a fourth quarter rally led by Brandon’s Will Rogers and two key blocks from Latarius Carr and Tyrese Hopkins to grab a 17-16 victory in overtime.
How it happened
Jordan Ingram from St. Paul’s Episcopal scored the game’s opening touchdown as Alabama formulated an 11-play, 69-yard drive taking nearly six minutes off the clock to go up 7-0.
Both defenses stood tall throughout the rest of the first half, as neither team could obtain any points.
In the third quarter, Thompson’s Evan McGuire booted a 30-yard field goal through the netting for Alabama to give them the lead 10-0 with 8:02 remaining.
Mississippi finally put a drive together to put points on the board when they drove 56 yards on 18 plays, chewing over eight minutes off the clock on a Gavin Gaudin (Northwest Rankin) 31-yard field goal.
Brandon’s Will Rogers drove Mississippi down the field on an 11-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tupelo’s Trip Wilson. A successful PAT tied things up 10-10 with 2:04 left in the contest.
Latarius Carr from Olive Branch blocked a 25-yard field goal attempt from McGuire to send the game into overtime tied 10-10.
In overtime, Rogers found Janari Dean (South Panola) on a six-yard touchdown pass to take their first lead of the game. A successful PAT from Gaudin put Mississippi up 17-10.
Alabama responded with a nine-yard touchdown pass in overtime when Logan Smothers found Mike Pettway for a touchdown. On the PAT attempt, McGuire’s kick was blocked by Tyrese Hopkins from Starkville, giving Mississippi their third-straight win over Alabama.
