Mike Leach will become the new head football at Mississippi State according to several national college football reporters via social media on Thursday, including Pete Thamel, who reported the news first.
Mississippi State Athletic Director John Cohen seemed to confirm the news on Twitter, twitting out a video produced by the university that depicts a clip from the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean” along with clips of Mississippi State football.
During his eight-year tenure at Washington State, Leach led the Cougars to a 55-47 record and five straight bowl appearances. He was also the first coach in Washington State history to lead the Cougars to an 11-win season and is a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year winner.
Leach has coached at three different Power Five programs.
Mississippi State fans on twitter seemed split over the apparent hiring, citing defensive struggles at the places he’s coached.
A public announcement by the university is expected soon.
