HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The final push to capture a third consecutive Conference USA regular-season title comes to a head this weekend when the Southern Miss baseball team plays host to UAB in the final weekend of the regular season.
The two teams are set to play single games at 6 p.m., both Thursday and Friday, before completing the regular-season slate with Senior Day with a 1 p.m., contest, Saturday at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles (33-17, 19-8 C-USA) are tied with Florida Atlantic for the league lead with the final three games left. Southern Miss will need to win one more game than the Owls to capture the league title outright and earn a No. 1 seed in next week’s C-USA Tournament, May 22-26, at MGM Park in Biloxi. Should the two teams win an equal amount of games, the two schools will then tie for the championship and the Golden Eagles will be the No. 2 seed as FAU won the series over Southern Miss earlier this month at The Pete.
After dropping two of three at Rice over the weekend, Southern Miss started this week on a good note with a 12-2 home win over Troy Tuesday night. Southern Miss banged out 16 hits in the game, while also posting a season-best 15 strikeouts by their pitching staff.
Senior catcher Cole Donaldson led the way for the Golden Eagles with three hits and four RBI, while sophomore outfielder Gabe Montenegro extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a late run-scoring single.
Southern Miss plays a UAB squad that comes into Hattiesburg with a 25-28 overall record and 10-17 in league play, fighting for a spot in the tournament.
The Golden Eagles hold a 54-23 advantage in the series since both schools became inaugural members of C-USA for the 1996 season. Southern Miss has also won the last eight games in a row, including four games last season.
