The Mississippi State Bulldogs claimed a 38-17 win over the  Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles giving the Bulldogs the lead in the overall series at 15-14-1. The teams will meet again in Starkville in 2023 and in Hattiesburg in 2025.

My thoughts on the Big 3

The Golden Eagles offense lacked a first half running game,  just like in their season opener against Alcorn. They did not score until there were five minutes to play in the third period. The Eagles had several explosive offensive plays but were never consistent. USM is a very disciplined team as they were only penalized once in the game. This week’s Troy game will give us better a take on this year’s Southern Miss team.

Bulldogs

The Golden Eagles defense could not stop the Bulldogs' quarterback Tommy Stevens. The Eagles defense could not pressure the Bulldogs' starter as he hit on 9 of 10 passes for 105 yards and two scores. Kylin Hill rushed for 123 yards on 14 carries to lead the Bulldogs offense. The Bulldogs have depth at quarterback as Garrett Shrader filled in nicely for Stevens, who was injured late in the first half. The Bulldogs are loaded at running back with Nick Gibson and Lee Witherspoon backing up Hill. MSU has upgraded the receiving that makes them a dangerous team. The defense will get better each week. Next up is Kansas State at 11 a.m. Saturday at Scott Field.

Rebels

The Rebels made a great improvement on offense in their 31-17 win over Arkansas Saturday in Oxford. Offensive line play was a major issue in the loss to Memphis.  Running back Scottie Phillips ran for 143 yards and two scores thanks to the improvement in the line play. Matt Corral struggled against Memphis but threw for 246 yards and two scores against the Razorbacks. Elijah Moore caught seven passes for two touchdowns. The defense played another great game holding Arkansas to only 2.5 yards a rushing attempt. The Rebels defense has only allowed 20 points in two games. Next up is SE Louisiana on Saturday.

Other Football News

Dak Prescott led the Dallas Cowboys to a very impressive 35-17 win over the New York Giants led by Eli Manning. Dak, surrounded by numerous offensive playmakers and a stout defense, hit on 25 of 32 passes for 405 yards and four scores. Manning was 30-of-44 for 306 yards and one TD. Former Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram caught 11 passes for 116 yards and one TD for New York.

Brandon’s Gardner Minshew was supposed to be the Jacksonville Jaguars' backup quarterback in his rookie year. His first regular season game came on Sunday as he entered the game for the injured Nick Foles and passed for two touchdowns. He was 22-of-25 for 275 yards in a 40-26 loss to Kansas City.

Millsaps downed Belhaven while Alcorn ran past Mississippi College last Saturday. Delta State won their season opener while Jackson State and Mississippi Valley fell.

Ole Miss has 30 of its former players on National Football League rosters. Mississippi State has 25 players while Southern Mississippi has a dozen players playing in the league. Belhaven and Alcorn have one player each on NFL rosters.

Archie Manning’s grandson Arch Manning played his first high school football team and threw three touchdown passes. Young Arch is Cooper’s son and is a freshman at Newman High School in New Orleans.
