ATLANTA – In the midst of a stellar final season, Jordan Danberry was recognized as one of the top players in the country Tuesday morning, earning a spot on the Citizen Naismith Trophy Player of the Year 2020 Midseason Team by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
"Jordan is without a doubt playing some of the best basketball that I have seen in a long time," said head coach Vic Schaefer. "She is an all-around player on the court for us. On defense, she always defends everyone's best guard, and she sets the tone for our entire team on that end of the floor. She is doing it all. She doesn't rest or take plays off. She continues to improve every day. What she is able to do at both ends of the floor is what really sets her apart right now."
Named to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Midseason Team last month, Danberry ranks 15th among Division I players in total steals (68) and is 25th in steals per game (2.7 spg) to pace a Mississippi State defense that is eighth in the country and leads the SEC in turnovers forced per game (21.8). She has recorded multiple steals in 18 contests this season, including nine outings with four or more steals.
On the offensive end, the graduate guard ranks third on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and second in assists (79). She has shot 50 percent or better from the field in 12 games this year and sits at eighth in the SEC in field goal percentage (.516). She has posted four 20-point performances this season and has eclipsed double-digit scoring in 18 games.
The Conway, Arkansas, native ranks inside the top 10 in the SEC during conference play in steals (2.5/3rd), assist/turnover ratio (2.0/6th assists), (3.9/7th) and field goal percentage (.504/7th) and is 24th in scoring (11.8 ppg). Danberry's leadership and intensity on the court is a big reason for sixth-ranked Mississippi State's 22-3 (10-1 SEC) record.
Danberry was one of 30 players from across the country to earn a spot on the list and was one of seven SEC players. The 10 semifinalists will be announced on March 3, and the finalists will be revealed on March 20. The winner of the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women’s Player of the Year will be announced on April 4.
Up next, State hits the road for its third top-25 matchup in a row, as the Bulldogs travel to take on No. 18 Kentucky at Memorial Coliseum for a 4 p.m. tip next Sunday. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and can be streamed on the MSU Radio Network.
