Stringer eliminated Beulah Hubbard, 12-3, in the 1-A MHSAA playoffs behind the hitting of Chip Ward, who had three hits. Winning pitcher Heath Graham doubled and tripled for Chuck Blackwell’s Red Devils.

Steve Powe fanned 15 batters in leading the Yankees over the White Sox, 5-0, in Dixie Youth baseball action. Steve Fairchild homered for the winners. Mike Daly pitched for the White Sox.

USM baseball, with a school record 41 wins, received their first ever bid to the NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Hill Denson Eagles were to play USC in Baton Rogue. MSU (45-18) was host their regionals and meet BYU in the opening round play. Ole Miss baseball coach Jake Gibbs stepped down as the Rebels’ head coach.

LSU pitcher Britni Sneed hit USM’s Jennifer Ford with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning as USM claimed the Baton Rouge Regionals with a 1-0 win. The lady Eagles will advance to the College World Series in Oklahoma City. USM’s Courtney Blades was named the MVP of the tournament, as she allowed only three runs in four games.

West Jones basketball star Ted Musgrove signed with A.G. Robinson and Southeastern Baptist College in Laurel. Musgrove averaged 18.6 points per game and was named West Jones High School Best All-Around Athlete as he started in football, basketball and track.

Daniel Blackledge banged out four hits and Scott Fenton added three hits in leading McMurry over Wayne Farms, 16-5, in Dixie Boys baseball action. Derek McKee singled and hit an inside the park home run, while Clifton Pitts doubled and singled for the winners. Joey Hickner was the winning pitcher in the contest and also doubled. Corey Jones led Wayne with three hits. Clint Rayburn added an inside the park home run for Wayne Farms.
