James Kilpatrick recovered a Jones Junior High fumble in the final minute to preserve a 20-16 South Jones win. Benny Welch scored twice for SJ while Danny Nichols also scored for the Braves. Tommy Commer passed to Greg Galaher and Ric Alexander ran 5-yards for the Yellowjackets’ touchdowns. James Swinney had an interception for the winners.

Billy Cannon returned a punt 89 yards in the fourth period to lead LSU to a 7-3 win over Ole Miss. The Rebels drove to the Tigers’ 1-yard line with 18 seconds to play but were held at bay by LSU. Robert Khayat kicked a 22-yard field goal in the first period for Ole Miss.

Glenn Marsh scored four touchdowns and Daniel Darby tallied three times as Oak Park romped over Rowan, 60-20, for their first win in nine years over the Hattiesburg school. In other action, Laurel blanked Provine, 47-0, while NE Jones fell at Pascagoula, 36-8, and West Jones lost to George County, 32-12.

The Jones Junior High Yellowjackets (6-3) blanked the Maddox Rebels, 30-0, in the city championship game. Tim Stanley ran for two scores and passed to Jerry Perkins for the winners. Perkins also rushed for a score.

Adolph Ducksworth, Kip Simpson, Chip Gieger, and Chris Poore ran for scores as West Jones whipped Columbia, 28-8. South Jones, led by quarterback Simmy Cooley, romped over Petal, 35-13. Cooley passed for two scores and ran for two. Rocky Purvis and Donnie Bender scored on the pass plays while Leo Shelby tallied on a short run.

Bobby Stevens ran for 120 yards and scored on a 30-yard run as NE Jones whipped Quitman, 9-0. David Holifield ran for 108 yards for the Tigers. Scottie Phillips and Morris Scott had TD runs, while Jason Simpson passed a 7-yard TD to Anthony Hutchison to lead SJ to a 19-14 win over West Jones. Terryl Ulmer ran for a score and passed to Woody Megehee for the WJ scores.

West Jones (8-3) romped to a 33-6 win over South Jones (6-5) as Melvin Thomas rushed for 118 yards and scored three times on runs of 32, 7, and 2 yards. Geary McDonald returned a kickoff 90 yards for WJ, while Lorenzo Page ran 16 yards for a score. Charles Watts scored for SJ on a 2-yard run. Hattiesburg won their sixth straight ‘Little Brown Jug’ game, 35-14, over Laurel. P.T. Jones returned a punt 70 yards and caught a 23-yard TD pass from Daryl Carter in leading undefeated NE Jones to a 34-13 win over Quitman. Dennis Walker and Carter had short runs for scores while Marcel Sampson returned an interception 25 yards for a score.
