We don’t have a local high school game on tap this week to match the hype that West Jones versus Laurel generated last week. The one high school game this week that comes closest to carrying the badge of “must see game of the week” is Bay Springs at Enterprise Clarke. The “Bulldogs against the Bulldogs” is not among the games our expert prognosticators will pick from this week, so let me select a winner right here. Bay Springs comes into this match-up at 8-1, while Enterprise will take the field with an 7-1 record. Both teams score near 30 points per game, while the Bay Springs’ defense is just a tad better, giving up 14 points per outing compared to 18 by Enterprise. Both teams lost to Taylorsville, and it wasn’t even close for either team. So, there’s nothing to comparatively pull from there.
However, if we take a look at two other common opponents, Stringer and Mize, we learn that Enterprise won those two games by a combined 14 points. Bay Springs whipped those same two opponents by a combined 54 points. Let’s go with the Bay Springs crew in this “Showdown of the Bulldogs” by three scores, 35-14.
Moving to the college scene, there is not a lot of excitement right now in the Magnolia State about USM, MSU or Ole Miss as we move toward the last Saturday of October. Maybe some enthusiasm will be generated by the time we make it to the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving night. There is, however, some big college games on tap this weekend in the South. The biggest of the big just may be Auburn at LSU. Auburn comes into this contest with a 6-1 record, with their only loss coming at the hands of Florida, while LSU is 7-0 and eying a huge fight with Alabama on November 9 after a bye week. If the hosts lose to Auburn this week, it will take some shine off that game with Bama. Auburn has the defense to make this close, but LSU has a Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback in Joe Burrow and the home-field advantage. It should be a dandy!
