Laurel High rolled over Hattiesburg, 47-12, before 10,000 fans on the campus of Mississippi Southern College. Laurel then met Meridian for the South State football championship. Tornadoes quarterback Billy Sumrall passed for 173 yards and Chet Bergalowski added another 82 yards in the air to lead the winners. Sumrall hit Eddie Loper for scores of 11 and 65 yards while Bergalowski hit James Nichols on a 34-yarder for a score. Loper also had two short TD runs, and Doug Tillery added a rushing TD. Jimmy Dale Pitts also scored for the winners.

Quarterback Fred Blackledge threw TD passes to Mickey Harrison and Tommy Scrimpshire as Glade (8-1) whipped Sandersville, 21-7, in the Waynesboro Timber Bowl. The Glade win avenged a 7-6 loss to Sandersville during the regular season.

Enos Hamilton rushed for 140 yards and scored on a 74-yard run to lead Bay Springs over Taylorsville, 20-14, in the South State Championship. Quintyn Wilson scored on runs of 4 and 10 yards for the winners. Jason Campbell passed to Ben Ford while Chris Keyes ran 35 yards for Taylorsville scores.

Archie Manning passed for two scores and ran for two more as the Ole Miss Rebels whipped Mississippi State, 48-22, in Starkville. Manning passed for 206 yards while Floyd Franks caught eight passes for Ole Miss. Bulldogs quarterback Tommy Pharr passed for 290 yards and hit split end David Smith 14 times for a new MSU school record.
Alcorn quarterback Marvin Weeks threw for 408 yards and three scores plus ran for two more as the Braves romped over Jackson State, 50-8.

Steve McNair was invited to play the Senior Bowl in Mobile. McNair was the all-time leading passer in NCAA history with 16,823 total passing yards over his four-year career. The Mount Olive native passed for 5,799 yards for the year.
Carl Blackledge scored two goals and Jay Hassell added another as Laurel stopped Wayne County, 3-1, in soccer action. LHS goalie Lance Jones had six stops in goal.
Armond Wilson’s three-pointer with 56 seconds to play led NE Jones past West Jones, 56-55. Answar Morgan led the winners with 20 points and Wilson added a dozen points. Larenzo Page led the Mustangs with 19 points.

Second-ranked Ole Miss landed three players on the All-SEC first team and two more on the second team. Running back Charlie Flowers, guard Marvin Terrell and end Larry Grantham were on the first team. Quarterback Jake Gibbs led the second team selections. MSU’s guard Tom Goode was also selected to the second team.

Frankie Peyton’s Washington Wildcats won the South Central Athletic Conference junior high title, 8-0, over Lincoln School of Collins. Samuel Porter and Eugene White scored touchdowns with Sylvester Walker adding two extra points.
Jackson Central outscored Laurel, 33-26, in the Mississippi Bowl played at Clinton. Despite the loss, Laurel sophomore Benny Hinton set a new bowl record with 217 rushing yards in the game. Hinton scored on runs of 27 and 19 yards, and quarterback Rod Gilbreath passed 10 yards to Denny Langley and 30 yards to Jack Young for other Laurel touchdowns.

Jones County Junior College had four players chosen to the South All-Star team: defensive back Eric Sims, quarterback Keon Carter and offensive linemen Josh Smith and Brian Harless.

Calhoun City stopped Bay Springs, 28-14, in the Class 2-A state champion game. Kevin Winfrey caught two touchdown passes from Billy Caston on plays of 22 and 44 yards. Caston was 9-of-17 passing for 213 yards for the Bulldogs.
