January 26, 1970
Therrell Meyers netted 34 points to lead Laurel past Natchez, 83-69. George Hill added 23 points, while Rod Gilbreath chipped in ten points.
West Jones rolled over South Jones, 55-38, as Ted Musgrove and Ronald Collins each scored 17 points. Buck Jones led South with 10 points. In other DeSoto Conference play, Northeast Jones downed the South Jones girls, 43-30. Gail Guthrie led the winners with 16 points, while Chris Roberts and Charlotte Wells each added a dozen points. Diane Stringer led South with 11 points, and Debra Hood added eight points.

Harry Harrison of Bay Springs was named to the Sunkist Coach Magazine All-American High School football team.
Charlotte Wells of Northeast Jones scored 43 points in leading the Lady Tigers over Brooklyn, 60-51, in DeSoto Conference Tournament play.
January 31, 1970
The Beat Four Lady Tigers whipped Oak Grove, 47-29, in Singing River Conference Tournament play. Hazel Foxworth led the winners with 18 points, while Mary Joe Perry added 14 points and Judy Pitts chipped in with 10 points.

January 19, 1980
Billy Taylor rolled a 224 game and 574 series in the Tuesday Night Men’s League at Airport Lanes.
Doug Jordan and Dexter McMillian each scored 16 points in leading Northeast Jones over West Jones, 59-43. Alfonzo Butler led West Jones with 14 points and Roger Kitchens added 12 points.
January 21, 1980
Barbara Jordan poured in 27 points in leading South Jones over Columbia, 43-37. In the guys’ game, Joey Kitchens burned the nets for 23 points in a 67-57 win over the Wildcats.
January 22, 1980
Melissa Douglas scored 13 points as Northeast Jones rolled past Petal, 50-29.
January 25, 1980
Mike Thornton scored 17 points in leading Northeast Jones past West Jones, 68-48, in the Southern Athletic Conference basketball tournament. Booker Barnes led West with ten points.
January 26, 1980
New Orleans quarterback Archie Manning was named to the NFC roster for the upcoming Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

January 23, 1990
Former MSU baseball star Will Clark has signed the richest contract in MLB history. The San Francisco first baseman’s contract is worth $15 million over four years.
The Wayne County War Eagles are ranked fourth in the state with a 23-1 record.
January 24, 1990
Tim Roberts scored 23 points in leading Laurel over NE Jones, 71-66. Fred McCullum added 21 points, while Shawn Hadley led NE Jones with 22 points. Pat Musgrove tallied 23 points in leading the Lady Tigers over Laurel, 55-48. Nikki Tatum led LHS with 14 points, and Kim Adams added 11 points.
Terry Jones scored 17 points in leading Heidelberg over Raleigh, 63-62. Willie McCullum and Shun Jones each added 13 points.
January 27, 1990
Bebee Beech and Cindy Brownlee each scored 16 points as Heidelberg Academy downed Columbia Academy, 49-33. Kyle Headrick scored 19 points and Chris McDaniel tallied 16 points as the Rebels won over Columbia, 70-53.
2000s
Jamie Kittrell scored 19 points in leading Wayne Academy over the Heidelberg Academy girls, 55-35. Kayla Cooley added 16 points for the winners. Dustin Lofton led Wayne Academy to a 60-38 win over the Rebels.

Jason Forte scored 17 points and Willie Page added 14 points as Bay Springs edged Laurel, 64-61.
January 21, 2000
The Laurel Lady Tornadoes blanked West Jones, 2-0, and qualified for the MHSAA playoffs for the first time. Ashley Hughes and Laura Taylor scored Laurel’s goals. Goalie Jessica Selman was credited with eight saves in goal.
January 22, 2000
Wayne County (19-3) downed West Jones, 55-38, as Kawaii Howard led the way with 22 points. Carla Bartee added 11 points for the winners. Rayford Everett scored 21 points as the War Eagles outscored West Jones, 80-72.
Lee Jones scored 22 points as Heidelberg whipped South Jones, 55-43.
January 26, 2000
Corey Jones scored 20 points as Wayne County nipped Quitman, 92-86, in overtime. Willie Evans added 14 points for the War Eagles while Quentin Mayfield chipped in 12 points.

Taylorsville quarterback Jason Campbell was named to the Parade All-American team.
