Blast from the Past

September 5, 1969 

Northeast Jones claimed their first win ever over South Jones, 8-0. Quarterback Keith Temple led the Tigers on a 12-play 69-yard scoring drive that was climaxed by Temple’s 29-yard run.  Coach Glen Wells of Northeast praised guard-linebacker Phil Raspberry and middle guard Barry Pates for great games. Danny Adams recovered a fumble and also intercepted a pass from Braves quarterback Jack Thompson. Robert Allred also intercepted a pass for Northeast. South Jones coach Hurshel Hathorn praised linebacker Wayne Easterling and fullback Joe Robinson for good games. 

 Laurel’s Jimmy Porter and South Jones’s Jackie Simpson are two of the 38 freshman football players reporting to Ole Miss.  

September 6, 1969 

The Rex Todd era began as West Jones downed Raleigh, 12-6, in their season opener. Raleigh took a lead in the opening minutes when Bobby Boykin dashed 51 yards for the score. The Mustangs rebounded to score on a Randy Hill to Rodney Collins pass play in the third period. In the final period, West scored on quarterback Wade Garvin’s 13-yard run.

Robert Rayner of Bay Springs is one of 38 freshman football players reporting to Ole Miss. 

Donny Logan scored on runs of 69 and 2 yards in leading Heidelberg over Enterprise, 12-0. The Oilers defense held the Bulldogs to 82 yards of total offense.Â
