Feb. 21, 1970

Laurel (24-7) romped over Gulfport East in the South State AA Tournament. Therrell Myers led the Tornadoes with 24 points, and George Hill added 20 points. Rod Gilbreath and Ray Orange each chipped in with 11 points.

Roosevelt’s Doug Conners scored 50 points in leading the Cyclones to the District 6 championship over Oak Park, 79-77.

Feb. 23, 1970

Nancy Easterling scored 51 points as Petal downed Northeast Jones, 73-48, in South State AA play. Charlotte Wells led NEJ with 18 points, Chris Roberts added 15 points and Gail Guthrie tallied 11 points.

Terry Caves scored a dozen points as the Stars whipped the Suns, 31-16, in Jaycees Bibby Basketball at Southeastern College. Terry Bond and Bill Perkins each scored six points for the Suns.

Gulfport rolled over Laurel, 70-49, in the South State AA championship game. George Hill led the Tornadoes with 15 points and Therrell Myers added 14 points. Mike Guell led the winners with 26 points.

Feb. 24, 1970

Laurel head football coach Rush McKay resigned to take a similar position in the Vicksburg City School System.

Feb. 21, 1995

Sabrina Barnett scored 23 points for Heidelberg, but the Lady Oilers fell to Raymond, 80-59, to end their season. Roshondra May added 16 points for Heidelberg.

Mississippi State basketball, coming off their first win at Kentucky in 30 years, is ranked 16th in the AP basketball poll, which is their highest ranking since 1963.

Feb. 22, 1995

Wayne County (25-5) blasted Jackson Jim Hill, 101-81, before a packed house in Waynesboro. Anthony Lancaster led the War Eagles with 19 points followed by Kendrick Davis with 16 points, Keshawn Walker tallied 15 points, John Mayfield chipped in 12 points, Delana Jordan scored 11 points and Marty Everett added 10 points.

Feb. 26, 1995

West Jones downed Laurel, 63-52, in the consolation game of the 4-A South State tournament game played at West Jones. Sonya McLaurin led all scorers with 29 points, while Erika Slayton scored 12 points, and Erica Robinson chipped in with 10 points. Terri Tatum led Laurel with 19 points, while Michelle Dukes and Shekeita Williamson scored 1 point each. Laurel ended the season at 20-6, and West Jones (24-9) heads to Jackson.
