Smokey Jordan’s three-pointer at the buzzer led Northeast Jones to a 55-54 win over Laurel. Jordan ended the game with 12 points while Dexter McMillian led the Tigers with 16 points. Clarence Darby led Laurel with 19 points.

Heidelberg Academy rolled over Kemper, 105-89, in high school basketball. Kyle Headrick led the Rebels with 26 points followed by John Womble with 25 points, while Chris McDaniel added 19 points.

Laurel blanked South Jones, 14-0, in the first meeting of the schools on the football field in the annual Laurel Jaycees Bowl. Allen Williams scored twice to lead Laurel. South Jones quarterback Simmy Cooley was named the offensive MVP of the game while Laurel linebacker Lee Cole was selected the defensive MVP.

South Pike downed South Jones, 14-3, in the South State championship game. Jason Simpson kicked a 33-yard field goal for the Braves’ (10-3) only points.

Bay Springs rolled over Bassfield, 35-13, in the South State Championship game. Kevin Winfrey scored on runs of 9, 64 and 5 yards and returned a punt 73 yards for scores to lead the Bulldogs. Jesse Ducksworth hauled in an 18-yard pass from Winfrey for the final score.

John Vaught won his 100th game as head coach of Ole Miss as the Rebels rolled over Tennessee, 37-7, in Memphis. Jake Gibbs ran for two scores and passed to Larry Grantham and Cowboy Woodruff for scores to lead Ole Miss.

Jones County Junior College won their second consecutive state championship, 12-0, over Gulf Coast. The game was played at R.H. Watkins Stadium in Laurel on a very wet and muddy night. Chris Ford threw a 38-yard TD pass to Lou Barry and Scott Carter ran 40 yards for the only scores of the game.
John Fourcade threw a 29-yard TD pass to Ken Toler with 7:28 to play to lead Ole Miss past Mississippi State, 14-9, in the annual Egg Bowl.

Cedric Killings, Gary McGill and Ben Crosby each scored twice as Taylorsville roiled over North Forrest to win the South State 2-A Championship, 49-16.

Heidelberg Academy won the State Championship, 42-24, over Strider Academy. Adam Sauls passed for 271 yards and four scores. Cory Stephenson caught three of those TD passes and snared seven passes for 232 yards. Justin Stroud caught a 39-yard scoring pass while Sauls ran 10-yards for a TD. Andy West also scored on a 2-yard run for the Rebels.
Heidelberg turned the ball over seven times in dropping the South State 3-A to Franklin County, 27-12. Reginald Cooley caught a TD pass from Derrick McCarty while Derrick Ellis returned a fumble 35 yards for Oilers scores.
