On Monday night, October 28, in the first basketball home game of Southeastern Baptist College’s second season, the Chargers lost to Edward Waters College from Jacksonville, Fla., in the last minutes of the game. Fans in the packed stands were up and down cheering as the two teams stayed neck and neck throughout the game, swapping the lead back and forth.  With six minutes left in the game, SBC went on top 66-64.  Less than three minutes later EWC was on top 73-68.  Both teams battled to the end, and coach Broderick Hall substituted freely to keep his team energized. In the end though, EWC stayed on top to beat SBC, 85-79.

SBC’s center, Orpheus Rankins from Waynesboro, got hot in the second half and led the Chargers in scoring with 19 points for the game.  Although he fouled out midway through the second half, Jevah Jones followed Rankins in scoring with 16 points.  Gerobe Peters of Bassville and Trajan Fielder of Philadelphia both ended the game with 14 points each. The Chargers are 3-0 for the season.

Monday night was the Lady Chargers’ first game of the season, and they fell to the Lady Tigers of EWC, 84-44.  With only ten players on the roster and one not dressed out, the young team stayed off-balance throughout the game.

“We knew they were going to pressure us,” said Coach Jenone Bell. “We talked about taking care of the ball, meeting our passes, and just being patient. But a lot of that went out the window.  It’s the first game and we’ve got a young group.”

The leading scorer for the Lady Chargers was Deseree Moore from Gulfport with 16 points. She was followed by Makalya Laster with 14 and Tyra Conerly of Columbus with 11.

The next home game for the Chargers will be Friday, November 8 against Loyola University with tip-off at 7 p.m.  The Chargers will meet MUW the next day, on Saturday, November 9 starting at 4 p.m.

The Lady Chargers’ next game will be against MUW Saturday, November 9 at 2 p.m.
