Pearl River’s softball team had an incredibly successful Wildcat Invitational over the weekend and Grace Stringer of Moselle (South Jones High School) had a lot to do with the team’s great tournament.
The freshman pitcher won both of her starts, leading PRCC (4-2 overall) past Marion Military Institute 7-3 on Friday before nearly throwing a no-hitter Saturday in the Lady Wildcats’ 8-0 win over Baton Rouge in six innings.
Against MMI, Stringer scattered four walks and three hits over six innings, allowing one unearned run. The freshman right-hander also struck out five to tie her season high.
Stringer took a no-hitter into the fifth inning the next day, allowing just one hit while striking out four in six scoreless frames.
“Grace got in there and pretty much dominated the entire game,” Pearl River coach Leigh White said at the time.
It’s hard to imagine a better start to a collegiate career than Stringer’s. The South Jones product has won all three starts and boasts an 0.82 ERA, striking out 14 against 11 hits and six walks in 17 innings.
Pearl River returns to the diamond this weekend to play in the Sun Chiefs Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala.
