October 17, 1994 

JCJC improved to 7-0 with a 38-21 win over Gulf Coast. Eric Hines scored twice on short runs while J.J. Thigpen also scored on an 18-yard run. Richard Lucas hit Ted Ducksworth for a score, and Yahmani Adams returned a punt 83 yards for a TD. 

 

Freshman Heath Graham passed for 182 yards and a TD plus ran for a score in leading USM over SW Louisiana, 43-20. 

 

Patrick Nix ran 8 yards with 30 seconds to play to lead Auburn past Florida, 36-33, to keep their 18-game winning streak alive. 

 

October 18, 1959

Tulane became the first team to score on Ole Miss, but, in the end, the Rebels won, 53-7. Charlie Flowers scored three times to lead Ole Miss. Ralph Smith, Larry Grantham, Bobby Franklin and Cowboy Woodruff also scored for the undefeated Rebels. 

 

October 18, 1969

William Davis scored on a 43-yard run as Clara tied Heidelberg 6-6 in Cotton Valley Conference play. Leland Davis scored for Heidelberg. 

 

Al Vowell scored on two short runs as Taylorsville ran over Stringer, 28-6. Keith Moore scored on a 6-yard run and Ted Cannon on a 1-yard sneak for the other Tartars points. Billy King picked off a Tartar pass and ran it back 70 yards for a score. 

 

Joe Robinson scored twice on short runs as South Jones defeated Tylertown, 14-6.  

 

Collin Harmon scored on a 21-yard interception, and Glenn Marsh ran 70 yards for a TD as Oak Park downed Higgins Lions, 14-6. 

 

Northeast Jones (5-1-1) defeated Brooklyn, 14-6, to celebrate Homecoming. Barry Pates recovered a fumble in the end zone and Carlton Dillard rushed three yards for a score to lead the Tigers. Landry Atkins, Danny Adams and Bruce West each had seven tackles for the winners. 

 

October 18, 1979 

Willie Stargell led the Pittsburg Pirates past the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh game of the World Series. Stargell had four hits and drove in two runs in the 4-1 win. 

 

October 19, 1969 

No. 3 USC and No. 10 Notre Dame tied 14-14 in college football play. 

 

Ole Miss rolled over Southern Mississippi, 69-7, in college football action. 

 

October 20, 1979 

Sherman Wells kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime to lead South Jones past Columbia, 10-7. Donnie Bender recovered a fumble in the end zone for a Braves TD.

 

Laurel whipped Brookhaven, 21-6, in Big 8 football play. Terry Phelps scored twice for LHS while Jeff Moss intercepted two passes for the Tornadoes. 

 

Jessie Lee Nicholson passed 26 yards to Davis Stevenson and Jason Dixon kicked a 24-yard field goal as Clara downed McLain 10-8 in Singing River action. 

 

October 21, 1989

Michael Walker was 10-of-13 passing for 174 and one touchdown in leading Laurel over Quitman, 21-7. 

 

Jason Simpson ran for one score and passed to Lee Mitchell to lead South Jones over Columbia, 41-8. Ira McGilberry, Greg McGilberry, Kent Ester and Morris Scott also scored for the Braves. 

 

Heidelberg Academy nipped Wayne Academy, 15-14, as John Womble passed 6-yards to Shawn Myrick for the winning score with 1:05 to play in the game. Shane Cook kicked the game-winning extra point and earlier in the game scored on a 1-yard run.  Jerry Hopkins scored on a 4-yard run and Dana Scarbrough ran 6-yards for Jaguar scores. 

 

Wayne County upset No. 6 Hancock behind a 2-yard run by Lee Everett, and Everett McDougle scored on a 16-yard fumble recovery run. 

 

Jesse Ducksworth scored three times as Bay Springs whipped Forest, 23-8. 

 

Stringer’s Chip Ward threw touchdown passes to Omar Knight and Sonny Brannon as the Red Devils downed Lake, 32-0. 

 

October 22, 1994 

Tim Weathersby ran for two scores in leading Laurel over NE Lauderdale, 14-7. 

 

West Jones nipped Magee, 7-6, as Lorenzo Page ran 40 yards with a Trojan fumble caused by Ryan Griffin’s hit of Magee quarterback Chad Grayson. 

 

Ben Williams passed to Patrick Hutto and Steven Holyfield scored on a short run as Wayne Academy edged Newton Academy, 12-6.  Ryan Pitts rushed for 109 yards for WA. 

 

No. 14 Heidelberg improved to 9-0 with a 20-0 win over Newton. Derrick Terrell and Maurice Nixon scored for the Oilers. 

 

Quarterback Cory Reynolds passed for three scores and ran for another in leading No.18 Wayne County past Picayune, 42-16. Reynolds hit Johnny Loper, Darriel Ruffin and Marcus Powe on TD passes while Reynolds, Tiny Leverette and Perry Leverette scored rushing touchdowns. Homecoming Queen Rachel Reyes enjoyed the win. 

 

October 23, 1999

Ryan Earnest became the all-time Laurel Tornado rusher as he gained 235 yards in a 53-0 win over NE Lauderdale in the Tornadoes’ Homecoming game. Earnest rushed for 2,145 yards in his career breaking Anthony Hardy’s 2,127 yards. Hardy played from 1982-84 for Laurel.  

 

Northeast Jones whipped West Jones, 21-7. Jermaine Jones rushed for 163 yards and scored twice and Juan Moncivias scored the other Tiger touchdown. Errick McDonald passed to Thomas Barnett for the Mustang’s score. 

 

Heidelberg Academy improved to 10-0 with a 13-12 win over East Rankin as Brian Kittrell kicked two field goals including a 52-yarder. Matt Windham scored the lone touchdown for Heidelberg while Brett Dabbs stopped a two-point conversion attempt late in the contest. 

 

Josh Tate and Ryan McCaa each scored three times as Wayne Academy rolled over Kemper Academy, 60-12. John Walker, Matt Brown and Chase Whatley also scored for the Jaguars.
