March 13, 1970

Gail Guthrie, Cindy Odom, Lynne Thomas, Kathy Enziwieler, Debbie Rose, Charlotte Wells, Karen Clark, Concetta Scott and Shelia Gardener were chosen as Northeast Jones cheerleaders. 

March 12, 1980 

Laurel edged Harrison Central, 3-2, in the Hattiesburg Baseball Tournament. Jay Reeves was the winning hurler as he fanned 10 batters and only allowed three hits. Tim Wheat’s ninth inning hit plated the winning run for LHS. David Freeman, Jeff Moss and Eric Hollingshead also added hits for the winners. 

March 14, 1990 

West Jones nipped South Jones, 9-8, in high school baseball. Chad Cummins was the winning pitcher with Jeffery Robinson gaining the save. Rodney Phillips led WJ with two hits while Brian Abernathy and Cummins each doubled for the Mustangs. Steve Cooley, Chris King and Walter Buckley had two hits each for South Jones. 

March 17, 1990

William Carey basketball coach Steve Knight, who led the Crusaders to a 23-5 record, was named the Conference Coach of the Year. Vic Nelson and Andrew Goldman of Carey were named to the league’s all-conference first team. 

March 19, 1990 

Mike Wright had three hits and gained the pitching win as Laurel downed Petal, 8-3, in high school baseball. Chris Nichols also had three hits and Josh Blair doubled and singled in the win for LHS at Smokie Harrington Park.  

March 10, 1995

Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It. That was the motto for the West Jones Lady Mustangs as they captured the school’s first state championship with a 59-44 win over Alcorn Central. Sonya McLaurin led the winners with 16 points, and Erica Robinson chipped in 13 points while Erika Slayton added 11 points. Sam Crosby scored nine points while Heather Reeves chipped in six points, and Betty Hickey scored four points. 

March 11, 1995

Neal Floyd hurled a five-hitter as Jones County Junior College nipped Hinds, 3-2. Brandon Wade tripled and singled while John Satcher added two singles for the Bobcats. 

March 15, 1995 

Brent Rustin pitched Northeast Jones past Neshoba, 11-5, in high school baseball. Kent Holifield hit a 2-run homer for the Tigers. 

March 12, 2000

Joey Hickner blasted a grand slam in leading West Jones past Northeast Jones, 9-0. Erick Barkley tossed a three-hitter for the Mustangs in gaining the pitching win. Daniel Blackledge also had two hits, and Craig Bush homered for the Mustangs. 

March 16, 2000 

Heidelberg Academy battled the top academy baseball team in the state but fell to Jackson Prep, 6-5. Derek McKee, Heath Ainsworth and Kelly Rounsaville each had two hits for the Rebels. Scott Stains was the winning pitcher while Rounsaville hurled for the Rebels. 

March 19, 2000

Laurel swimmer Mason Seidenberg won five goal medals and two bronze to garner the top high pointer in the under-6 boys at the USM Natatorium for the Laurel Hub Fins. 

Kris Lightsey and Michael Schwan each blasted three-run home runs and Larry Johnson added a two-run shot to lead NEJ over Mendenhall, 10-5.
