Walter “Dub” Powell, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home in Mobile, AL, on August 30, 2019. Mr. Powell was born in Hattiesburg, MS, on July 19, 1943, the third child of Ross and Edna Powell.
The family moved to Leakesville, MS, when Dub was in elementary school and moved back with his family to Hattiesburg his senior year for him to become kicker for the Hattiesburg High School football team. After high school graduation, Dub entered the United States Air Force where he served four years, stationed at Galena, AK. He and his new wife moved to Mobile, AL, in 1968 and remained there throughout their married years. Dub retired from Ingalls Shipbuilding after 38 years.
Dub is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patsy Cassady Powell; his daughter, Kelly (Derek) Qualls, their children, Jackson and Cassady; daughter Keri (Christian) Bryant and their children, Ethan and Gray. He is also survived by brothers, Edwin “Red”, Danny, and Randy. Also surviving him are many nephews, nieces, and friends.
Dub was consistently active in his daughters’ many sports activities, faithfully recording every volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track game. There are many proud and happy memories recorded in his vast library of tapes.
Dub was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Edna Powell, and his sister, Geraldine Floyd.
Services for Mr. Powell will be on Saturday, September 7, 2019, at 12:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church, Leakesville, MS. Visitation with the family will be held in the Activities Center of the First Baptist Church from 10:30-12:30. Interment will be at the Hicks Family cemetery at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Leakesville, MS.
