Services will be held Tuesday, February, 18, 2020, at First Baptist Church of Leakesville for Mrs. Martin Rae Smith Turner, age 97, of Leakesville. Martin, better known as “Marty”, was born on July 15, 1922, in Grafton (now Sand Hill), MS.
She married her childhood sweetheart, Jay Turner, on August 3, 1949. They traveled together around the country and abroad for many years as he served in the United States Air Force. Marty worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for many years for various businesses and organizations including: the Greene County Health Department, Chancery Clerk’s Office, McLeod-Magnolia Cemetery, and First Baptist Church of Leakesville. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star (Leakesville Venus Chapter #175 and later the Wade East Central Chapter #393) for over 60 years and served in various positions including Grand Martha for the state of Mississippi. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Leakesville and served as the Greene County Baptist Associational WMU Director for many years. Following the death of her husband in 1996, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her special friend, Dr. Vernon Tuttle, of Poplarville.
Marty passed away on February 13, 2020, at her residence with her great-nephew, Charles L. Breland, at her side.
Marty was preceded in death by her husband, Jay A. Turner; parents, Martin Smith and Laura Epsy Gunn Smith; sisters, Zoe Lee Smith Breland, Eva Mae Smith Turner, and Rachael Ann Smith Jones; special friend, Dr. Vernon Tuttle; and one nephew, Herman Turner.
She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and one great-great-great niece.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Leakesville. Funeral services will follow at 3:30 p.m. with Bro. Danny Forrest and Bro. Martin Jones officiating. Pallbearers for the service will be: Stacey Lewis, Jacob Lewis, Wesley Lewis, Hank Eubanks, Lauren Turner, and Lee Turner; Honorary Pallbearer, Malcolm Eubanks; Alternate Pallbearers, Scott Bray and Ricky Dickson. Burial will follow in McLeod-Magnolia Cemetery.
Jones and Son Funeral Home in Richton is in charge of arrangements.
