Arthur C. Albert, Sr., 93, of Hattiesburg, better known as Art to his beloved friends and family, was called to his Heavenly home on the afternoon of June 3, 2020. He was known as a member of “The Greatest Generation” and to his friends and family, he truly was the greatest.
Art was born January 29, 1927, in Syracuse, NY. He served in the United States Navy for 21 years. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 where he bravely fought and served aboard the USS Missouri during WWII. He witnessed Japan’s formal instrument of surrender ending WWII on September 2, 1945, while aboard the USS Missouri. He was injured on board the ship when a kamikaze struck it, but he never reported the injury. He later had to have his right kneecap removed and the bones fused together which caused him to walk with a stiff leg. He later went on to serve during the Korean and Vietnam Wars too.
Nearly every year, Art, his wife Sherry, and other family and friends would travel with him to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii to celebrate the signing of the peace treaty, and in fact he had plans to attend the 75th anniversary in just a few short months. Art was the life of the party when he would be on board the ship with crowds, cameras, and microphones following him around as he regaled his days aboard the “Mighty Mo”. He also loved to speak at schools to share with students the events of his time during WWII.
Not only was Art involved in all of his veteran events, but also, he was actively involved with the Dixie Boys Baseball Program for over 51 years.
Art was an active member of Main Street Baptist Church. He always loved going to his Sunday School class early to have coffee ready for everyone. Art will be remembered by everyone for being a jolly person but especially for his love for the Lord, his family, and his friends. He never missed a chance to give anyone he met a business card that also had the plan of salvation on it. He loved the Lord and wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to know Him too.
Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Hazel Albert; his brothers, Bobby, Jimmy, and Ray Albert; his sister Betty Jetty; and his first wife Martha “Mac” Albert.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 25 years, Sherry Albert of Hattiesburg, his brother, Roy Albert of Syracuse, NY; his two step-sons, Rhett Johnson (Amy) of Biloxi and Shane Johnson (Sabrina) of Vero Beach, FL; his grandchildren, Alex Johnson of Vero Beach, FL, and Saylor and Sydney Johnson of Biloxi; two bonus grandsons, Isaiah and Micah Carpenter of Vero Beach, FL; his brothers-in-law, Daniel “Boone” Delk of Sanibel Island, FL, and Jeff Delk of Indianapolis, IN; his mother-in-law, Barbara Delk of Indianapolis, IN; his sister-in-law, Allene M. Findley of Hattiesburg; numerous nieces and nephews; and two sons and their families.
Visitation will be Monday, June 8, 2020, at Main Street Baptist Church from 11:30 a.m. until service at 1:30 p.m. followed by burial in Highland Cemetery.
In accordance with State and Local mandates anyone who wishes to come to the visitation is asked to wear a mask and to follow social distancing guidelines.
