Alma Joanne McNair, 82, of Bay Springs, Mississippi, died Monday December 21, 2020, at Summerland Manor in Bay Springs, Mississippi. She was born Friday, June 24, 1938, in Scott County, Mississippi.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at Bay Springs City Cemetery with burial to follow in Bay Springs City Cemetery. Bro Ed King will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Joanne was a devoted Christian, wife and mother. She was a faithful member of Bay Springs Baptist Church for over 50 years. She served the church in many capacities including financial secretary/treasurer, choir member, and children’s choir leader.
She met the love of her life, Jim McNair, while attending Hinds Junior College in 1957. They were married one year later and remained so for the next 53 ½ years. She graduated from Hinds as Phi Theta Kappa where she majored in Business with an emphasis in Accounting. While at Hinds she was president of the Baptist Student Union.
She retired with Fail Engineering after working 35 years as a Comptroller and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer.
Joanne was very devoted to her family and loved by everyone. She will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert "Jim" McNair; parents, Joe Thomas and Ola Ree Carpenter; grandson, Keenan McNair; sisters, Doris Pace, and Rosie Jewel Register; brothers, Milton Carpenter, and Bernie Carpenter.
Survivors include her sons, James McNair, and Scott McNair; daughter, Susie Thornton (Reggie); sisters, Ellen Gray, and Ina Faye Bailey; grandchildren, Cory McNair, Jamie McNair, Jared Thornton, Daniel McNair, Jordan McNair, and Kayla Thornton; 2 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jared Thornton, Reggie Thornton, Scott McNair, James McNair, and Jeffrey Cargile.
Honorary pallbearers will be her Sunday school class “The Faithful Followers”.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of Summerland Manor for the tender care provided to Joanne for the duration of her residency there.
