Jon D. Newton, 80, of Stringer, Mississippi, died Friday, August 28, 2020, at his home. He was born Thursday, February 29, 1940, in Natchez, Mississippi.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 30, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church in Stringer, Mississippi. Funeral Services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church. Burial will be in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Bro. Corbey Jones will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Bay Springs is in charge of arrangements.
Jon was an avid fisherman for most of his life. He made many friends during his 40 plus years of tournament fishing all over the country. He had a passion coaching youth sports, football and baseball. At the age of 78 his biggest accomplishment in life was accepting Jesus Christ as his savior, being baptized, and becoming a member of Good Hope Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, F.T. and Ethel Newton; step-son, step-daughter, and step son-in-law, Glenn Hill and Melissa and Billy Cherry.
Survivors include his wife, Janis Newton; son, Scott Newton; daughter, Shannon Flaskamp (Troy); grandchildren, Amber Green (Nolan), Tori Jenkins (Wesley), Alexa Hughes (Brock), Kaitlyn Bonner (Blake), Morgan Newton, Hunter Thrower (Sarah), Walker Newton, Zachary Flaskamp, Logan Flaskamp, Corey Cherry (Courtney), and Tanner Cherry; twin brother, Joe Newton (Judy); brother, Charles Cameron; nephews, Ronnie Newton (Sylvia) and Don Newton (Tina); niece, Marty Carrell (Dow); step-son, Bruce Hill; Eleven Great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Hunter Thrower, Walker Newton, Zachary Flaskamp, Logan Flaskamp, Josh Newton, and Tyler Newton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Cameron, Jim Palmer, Ferris Shirley, Albert Short, Gary Little, Robert Pope, and Glenn Houston.
