Alfred Thomas Pugh, 88, of Stringer, Mississippi, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at the VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He was born Tuesday, March 31, 1931.
Visitation was held Thursday, November 21, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral House in Laurel, Mississippi. A graveside service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 22, 2019, at Salem Baptist Church in Stringer, Mississippi. Bro. Clay Smith officiated.
Alfred served in the U.S. Army for 26 and a half years. Following his retirement from the Army, Alfred worked 20 years at the Laurel Post Office before retiring again. He was an avid tennis player, often completing in tournaments across the state and in neighboring states. Alfred was once ranked the top tennis player in the state of Mississippi for his age group.
He was a devoted follower of Christ, a faithful husband and a loving father. Alfred was a long time member of Salem Baptist Church.
Alfred was preceded in death by sisters Mary Alice Anderson and Wydell Gregory, half-sisters Nina May Prine, Erma Haley, and Francis Thrash, half-brother Albert Pugh Jr., mother Leora Pugh, father Albert Pugh Sr., and daughter Susan Badon.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 41 years, Maria Kim Pugh and sons, Willie Pugh, Thomas Pugh, John Pugh, and James C. Pugh and daughter Liz Thompson.
Alfred is also survived by three sisters: Carolyn Clark, Delores Ballantyne, and Bonnie Sumrall.
