In what Laurel Police Chief Tommy Cox is calling “a very, very tragic accident,” a young Laurel School District student was struck by a vehicle late Monday, May 6 near Laurel High School.
According to information from the Laurel Police Department, the young child was hit by an SUV driven by a Jones County adult female a little before 6:00 p.m. According to the LPD, witnesses said the child darted into 12th Street between Laurel High School and the football stadium. The child was taken to the hospital and later, sadly, succumbed to injuries.
The Laurel School District Facebook page posted the following on the evening of the accident: “Due to the tragic death of one of our students, state testing scheduled for tomorrow, May 7, 2019, at Nora Davis Magnet School and Laurel Middle School has been postponed and will be rescheduled. Other schools will be sensitive to the emotional needs of our students and will make decisions on testing as needed. Additional crisis counseling support will be provided at all schools in the district.”
“Our condolences are certainly extended to all the family,” said Chief Cox.
