On what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the Choices Clinic held an Awareness event regarding and celebrating the sanctity of human life on the doorsteps of the Laurel Courthouse.

“January is the nationally observed Sanctity of Human Life month. Today is the would-be 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, but we are excited that we are able to celebrate that it was overturned,” said Brittany Sherman, Executive Director of the Choices Clinic of Laurel. “We are not celebrating the 50th anniversary of Roe, but that was overturned and thousands, if not millions of lives will be saved because of the ruling. We are here to celebrate and advocate for pre-born life.”

On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the case law decision of Roe vs. Wade which established constitutional federal protection for what has come to be called the “right to abortion.” The legal impact of the reversal returned to the legal status which prevailed prior to Roe vs. Wade’s enactment in 1973. This left the 50 states to legislate on abortion.

On June 27, 2022, the Mississippi Attorney General, Lynn Fitch, certified the state’s trigger ban, which bans all abortions except to save the life of the pregnant person, or in cases of rape or incest that have been reported to law enforcement.

“We are celebrating with a joyous jubilee,” stated Sherman.

Local pastor Luke Johnson was invited as the keynote speaker of the event.

“We have to show we are pro-life at every stage of life,” said Johnson during his speech. “It will never resonate with our culture if all we do is talk about it.”

“It is a great opportunity as a people, families, and churches, for us to be able to show a culture that says ‘all you care about is a political talking point to win elections.’ It was never about that stuff because its about life. God gave life,” added Johnson.

Sherman discussed what Choice’s Clinic does to help women who are in need of the next steps of pregnancy.

“Our mission is to educate and empower women to choose life because they feel the love and support that they need. We are a medical clinic, so we do pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and STI testing as well. All of our services are free. We have free prenatal vitamins and refer women to an OBGYN. We also have what’s called an empowerment program that is supported by donations from the community such as baby items. They are able to earn points throughout their pregnancy for those baby items and after the baby is born. It is two-fold, the medical and support system,” continued Sherman when discussing what the Choices Clinic does for expecting mothers.

The clinic also provides support to teens facing unplanned pregnancies in Jones, Wayne, Smith, Covington, and Jasper County.
