Sheriff Danny Rigel said Sunday he hopes to find out why a 28-year-old Hattiesburg man apparently became the first Lamar County homicide of 2020 late Saturday.
Deputies were called about 11:49 p.m. Saturday to the 200 block of Ray Bridge Drive, where a resident reported a man along the side of the road. He had been shot in the head.
The victim – whose name was not released by the Sheriff’s Office – was taken to the nearest hospital, Rigel said.
“He was brought to Merit Health Wesley,” he said. “Then we just transferred him to Forrest General later, where he passed away. The body was taken to Jackson (to the State Crime Lab), and an autopsy is expected (Monday).”
Rigel said the victim was wearing a black shirt, black jeans and blue tennis shoes. And the sheriff said investigators are trying to find answers.
“We're asking anybody that may have known what happened, saw anything, heard anything and have any information to call the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office (601.794.1005) or Crime Stoppers at 582-STOP,” he said. “I think there’s more to the story, but we can’t say for sure right now.”
